Energy21 steers you through the Allocation 2.0 transition

EBASE, our energy data management suite, is located at the heart of most of our energy clients. It is where all their energy data comes together, their base. The visualization tools look like a heart monitor in a way. It is crucial EBASE is ready for the changes Allocation 2.0 brings, in order to - sticking to the metaphor - prevent any flatlines. Among our clients the Balance Responsible Parties are impacted most by Allocation 2.0. The market program offers two main challenges, that of changing data and business processes. For these Energy21 provides two solutions, technology and people. EBASE software and our experienced energy consultants.

Being compliant - processing new and much more allocation data

As explained in earlier Allocation 2.0 articles, allocation data is vital for any Balance Responsible Party. Bad allocation data has enormous impacts on its continuity. In Tranche 1 we already enabled our clients to process telemetric measurement data from meter responsible parties (MRPs), with a split in offtake and injection values. In Tranche 2 this split will also be made in the allocation data, for both telemetric (TMT) as profiled (PRF) connections.

Technically the amount of TMT messages increases exponentially and also the message overhead will increase 3-fold by transitioning from EDINE to XML. With required response times of 15 minutes, heavy validations and peaks of tens of thousands of messages per minute, MFFBAS and TenneT have also recognized the enormous impact and are drawing attention to the technical challenges, anxious for lacking market awareness and readiness.

Due to these requirements, we have made significant architectural changes by adding queueing and containerization to the allocation message processing, offering a scalable solution to our clients.

Connectivity Playing a central role in a larger IT ecosystem at our clients, connectivity is one of EBASE’s core capabilities, retrieving from and feeding a spectrum of different applications the right data at the right time. In Tranche 2 we extended our options with a new API and message endpoints, which lay a solid basis for future connectivity developments.

Being in control - understanding the new data

In addition to processing and storing the allocation messages on time, you want to be in full control of your energy data. Not be steering blind. The additional granularity in the data makes that views and dashboards need to evolve to remain effective. New, more detailed data also calls for different standard checks, cross-checks and cross-sections.

The message explosion in addition necessitates a different way of managing data quality and quantity, functionally shifting towards a focus on management by exception to keep it workable.

Value creation - a tech and people combination

Having the correct data, on time and being in control is one thing, but actually monetizing it, creating additional value, is something different. That does not happen by itself, it requires experience and mind power combined with the right tools.

These tools can be delivered off-the-shelve, but are also already available by using existing EBASE functionality, such as scripting and virtual administrations. Our proprietary EBASE script language will i.e. be enhanced with additional standard functions to enable clients to work with the new data.

Dynamic Profile Allocation Simulation An example of a new, off-the-shelve product developed for Tranche 2 is DPAS, Dynamic Profile Allocation Simulation. With this functionality clients can analyze the differences between and effect of the new allocation methodology for profiled connections, for E1 and E2 categories. Based on those results clients can i.e. already learn to work with the new methodology - prior to market Go Live - and update their forecasting practices and determine whether they need to change portfolio positions. Since the allocation values will differ considerably for these connections after Go live, based on the new methodology, money can be made or lost, depending on your choices. We provide insights, so you can make informed decisions.

Workshop series We also help our clients by using workshops. For Tranche 2 we designed a workshop series covering all three main aspects: compliancy, in control and value creation. By getting the brightest minds of our clients in the room, from different domains, we made sure Allocation 2.0 was not ‘just another data/IT project’. We had specific workshops on value creating business processes like forecasting, sourcing and portfolio management, making our clients aware of what lies ahead and what their options are.
