SynergyS project: moving towards an optimized multi-commodity energy system
The energy transition leads to an increase of the use and production of electricity, preferably produced without the use of fossil fuels. When there is an abundance of renewable electricity, it makes sense to store that energy for later use or turn it into useful gases or heat. Contrarily, in times of shortages and extremely high electricity prices, using other sources or stored energy makes more sense economically. The ability to forecast and orchestrate energy demand and supply for multiple interchangeable commodities is not easily done. And when an economical optimum is not only measured in money, but the ‘greenness’ of the source or the carbon emissions involved are to be considered as well, it becomes even more complicated.
In the recently kicked off SynergyS project, Energy21 is cooperating with several universities, research institutes and market parties to develop a scalable solution for the problem sketched out above:
- By providing a versatile data platform that easily connects to third-party asset-operation systems as well as to external data sources and optimization algorithms, Energy21 provides an essential part in the project that can be the missing link between multi-commodity optimization and industrial production planning.
- The focus of the project will be on electricity and hydrogen first, but other commodities like steam or CO2 will be part of the architectural concept of the Energy21 solution as well.
The SynergyS project is funded by the Smart Multi-Commodity Energy System (SMCES) program of Energy Innovation NL – System Integration in the Netherlands. Besides Energy21 the consortium consists of Hanzehogeschool Groningen, Technical University Delft, Groningen University, TNO, Groningen Seaports, Emerson, Gain, Enshore and D4. Energy21 is proud to be a partner in the SynergyS consortium and is eagerly looking forward to the first tangible results.
